King’s Runner 10k – Traffic Advisory

King’s Runner 10k – Traffic Advisory

Traffic Advisory for the Honolulu Marathon King’s Runner 10K Run

Special traffic controls will be in effect in the Ala Moana, Downtown, Makiki and Kakaako areas for the

2018 King’s Runner 10K Run on Sunday, March 4, 2018

Beginning at 4:00 a.m, three lanes of Beretania Street from Victoria Street to Ward Avenue will be closed to traffic for preparation of the Start / Finish Line for the 10K Run.

The run starts at 6:30 am on Beretania Street at Thomas Square, utilizing the makai three lanes of Beretania Street (two lanes will remain open for vehicle traffic), left at Punchbowl Street (two lanes of makai bound traffic will remain open on Punchbowl Street), left at Pohukaina Street (see explanation below), right onto Keawe Street, crossing Ala Moana Boulevard, to & around the promenade at Waterfront Park, back out onto Ilalo Street, to Ward Avenue, right back onto Ala Moana Boulevard, right into Ala Moana Beach Road at Kamakee Street entrance, turnaround on the Beach Road just fronting the tennis courts, around the keyhole, back onto Ala Moana Beach Road, left onto Ala Moana Boulevard westbound, left onto Ward Avenue / Ilalo Street, left onto Ahui Street, right onto Olomehani Street, right at Ohe Street, left at Ilalo Street along on the makai parking lane, right at Keawe Street, crossing Ala Moana Boulevard, left at Pohukaina Street, right at Punchbowl Street & right on Beretania Street, back to the Start / Finish on Beretania Street fronting Thomas Square.

To facilitate the race, the road closure will begin at approximately 5:30 am. Ala Moana Boulevard / Nimitz Highway will be closed to general traffic at Alakea Street (eastbound) & Ward Avenue (in a westbound direction) from approximately 6:00 am to 8:00 am. Local traffic & City buses will be allowed into the area & permitted to cross Ala Moana Boulevard at Keawe Street during the breaks in the runner flow.

Eastbound traffic on King Street will be allowed to proceed during breaks in the runner flow.

Pohukaina is complicated. When the runner’s turn left from Punchbowl onto Pohukaina Street, they will be running on only the mauka lane of Pohukaina Street between Punchbowl Street & South Street – makai lane available for vehicle access to & from Waterfront Plaza – Restaurant Row. Then, after crossing South Street, they will be on the makai side of Pohukaina Strreet to allow the access out from One Waterfront Tower & Keahou Place on mauka lane of Pohukaina Street.

Beginning shortly after 5:30 am, early morning access to the Federal Building & Waterfront Plaza will be changed. Message boards will indicate the closure of Nimitz Highway & Ala Moana Boulevard at Alakea Street. Please proceed eastbound on Nimitz Highway to Alakea Street, turning left in a mauka bound direction. For those requiring access to the Federal Building or Waterfront Plaza, please turn right at Queen Street & at the Queen Street & Punchbowl intersection, vehicles will be permitted only to make a right turn. The two ewa lanes of Punchbowl Street will still be open for regular vehicular traffic, allowing vehicle access to the Federal Building & Waterfront Plaza. .

All vehicles exiting the area between 6:00 & 8:30 am on Sunday morning will be directed back ultimately onto Ala Moana Boulevard in a westbound direction. Therefore, we ask that all vehicles requiring access to East Honolulu, make a right (mauka bound) onto Alakea Street, to Vineyard Street & the Freeway eastbound. King Street will be closed intermittently at Punchbowl Street, so Vineyard Boulevard will be the faster travel route. For those departing vehicles requiring Makiki / Waikiki access, please continue on Vineyard Boulevard to Lusitana Street to Kinau Street, right (makai bound) on Pensacola Street, which will be unaffected by the street closures for the event.

As noted above, those using Ala Moana Boulevard westbound will encounter a road closure at Ward Avenue. HPD Special Duty officers will allow crossing of the course at Ward Avenue for access to Kewalo Harbor. We recommend those arriving on Sunday morning prior to 9:00 am from East Honolulu utilize the Freeway to Vineyard Blvd, left at Punchbowl Street makai bound to Pohukaina Street to the Federal Building & Waterfront Plaza.

For the individuals requiring access before 9:00 am to the Children’s Discovery Center, UH Medical School, Waterfront Park, 53 by the Sea & other establishments on the makai end of Kakaako, we advise that they use Kapiolani Boulevard westbound to Cooke Street. During breaks in the flow of runners, vehicles will be permitted at the direction of HPD Special Duty officers to cross the course at the intersection of Cooke Street & Ilalo Street.

Ala Moana Beach Road will be closed at the Kamakee Street entrance / exit. However, the Atkinson Street entrance to the Ala Moana Beach Road will remain open throughout the event. The Beach Road will be closed fronting McCoy Pavilion / tennis courts. .

All normal traffic should resume at approximately 9:00 am.

Some bus routes will be detoured & delayed. Bus riders may call TheBUS at 848-5555 or visit the Oahu Transit Services website (www.thebus.org) for details.

For questions regarding road closures for the event, please send email to the Honolulu Marathon (info@honolulu marathon.org) prior to March 3.
